4.      PROJECT PROGRESS REPORT

The main activity during the month of June 2006 was conducting of community survey and preparing an annual report. The survey results were shared with the Steering Committee members in the June 27 meeting of the Steering Committee.

One of the encouraging finding was the reduction of fear among the community members. Comparative analysis of the study conducted in July 2005 and repeated in June 2006 is given at: http://www.nocommunityleftbehind.ca/comparative_analysis.html In short, In the recent (2006) study, 50 percent community members responded that they “feel safe” and 10 percent said they “feel very much safe.” Together they form 60 percent of the respondents in the “feeling safe” range. By comparison, in 2005 there were 50 percent respondents in this range.

5.      Partner’s Reports

Ottawa Police Service: Constable Mario Bergeron presented an update on Police Service activities since the last meeting, which included law enforcement, meetings with youth and the community in the four communities: Heatherington, Banff, Confederation Court and Russell Heights.

Cst. Troy Young described Youth on the Move program, which was being implemented in the community in collaboration with the City Workers. The program focuses on building trust through information sharing on by-laws, addressing youth issues, meeting kids of different ages and engage them in different activities.

Ottawa Community Housing: Florence Brake reported that:

·           Tenants’ Association (TA) was established in Confederation Court.

·           A Community Day event was scheduled on July 11, 2006.

·           Work on establishing a House Board at Russell Heights was underway.

·           Situation in Banff Avenue community remained stable with out any serious incidents reported.

4.  Educating the community about proper garbage disposal was another issue for discussion in the meeting. Main causes for community’s concern and suggested measures were discussed. It was decided that all partners would stress on proper garbage disposal in their program activities as part of the broader community awareness for the overall health of the community.

Decisions:

1.   NCLB activities to continue as planned in Banff Avenue Community.

2.   The program shall be launched in the three other communities with conducting the initial survey and engaging the community and partners in preparing a strategic plan based on the findings and recommendations of the communities and their respective Community Houses.
